Villagers from Anna Hazare’s village in Ralegan Siddhi protested in a unique manner when they took out a ‘bucket morcha’ on Thursday, to protest against Tihar Jail authorities for allegedly refusing to provide basic bathing facilities to their mentor.

The villagers, both young and old, refused to take a bath themselves and walked into the main village square in hundreds with empty mugs and buckets.

Ralegan Siddhi resident and trustee of Hind Swaraj Trust, Sakharam Raut told DNA, “The villagers were extremely upset with the news of Anna not being provided basic amenities in Tihar Jail and decided to protest in this manner.”

The villagers, who had assembled before the Yadav Baba temple in the main village square with empty buckets, shouted anti-government slogans.

Later in the day, the villagers participated in a relay hunger strike and kept their shops closed in the afternoon.

According to Raut, at least 2,000 youth from neighbouring villages visited the village on motorcycles and jeeps to extend their support to Hazare’s movement.

On Thursday evening, the villagers took out a candle march through the streets of the village and decided to continue with the relay hunger strike on Friday as well. Raut said, “The village elders have decided that they would conduct protests daily to support Hazare’s campaign.”

According to Raut, the mood in the village was comparatively relaxed on Thursday evening.

“The villagers were happy to see Anna speaking to the media on television in the evening. They were also happy that he would be allowed to fast at Ramlila Maidan. We sense that the government is on the back foot now.”
